about

This score was written to accompany the 1903 silent film, "The Great Train Robbery," which was written, directed, and produced by Edwin S. Porter.

My aim was to interpret and amplify the drama of the picture while musing on the mental processes of someone at the turn of the century watching a moving picture for the very first time. Expression markings throughout the score follow this imaginary viewer as he experiences this thing which is strange and unfamiliar to him. That eye with which he views, has opened, never having done so. The music should be played in the same way.
